About syphilis

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by bacteria. The most common way to become infected is through unprotected intercourse. You can also become infected through oral or anal sex.

Syphilis develops in 3 stages - primary, secondary, and tertiary syphilis. The incubation period is about three weeks to three months for primary stage, seven to ten weeks for secondary stage, and several years for tertiary stage. In primary syphilis, the infection can be transmitted to others through sexual contact. In later stages, the infection is spread through the blood, which means that both fetuses and newborns can become infected. Nordictest's syphilis test provides rapid results. Common symptoms of syphilis

Some people experience symptoms, while others may have the infection without noticing it. In primary syphilis, a sore typically develops on the genital area, around the anal opening, or in the mouth. Swollen lymph nodes in the groin may also occur. The sores are usually painless and one to two centimeters in size, which can make them difficult to detect. Even though the sores can heal on their own after two to eight weeks, it doesn't mean you are infection-free. You still carry the infection, and it's important to receive treatment. Diagnosis is always made by a doctor.

If you have syphilis

Syphilis is covered by the Infection Protection Act, which means you are obligated to get tested if you suspect you may be infected. In Sweden, syphilis is classified as a notifiable infectious disease under the Infection Protection Act. Infection tracing is therefore mandatory. Infected individuals are encouraged to abstain from sexual intercourse until an antibiotic treatment has been completed and a follow-up test shows no signs of infection.
